What an amazing day at sea! Not only were there highly active sharks, but we saw all of the marine big 5! It was an early start with the boat launching from the harbor at 7 AM, however it was well worth the early rise. On the ride out to our dive location, we spotted a pod of bottlenose dolphins in the distance and they began swimming right towards the boat! They played around for a bit then continued on their way up the bay. After anchoring, our first shark appeared before our divers were even able to get into their wetsuits. Everyone on board quickly suited up and within 10 minutes we had 2 sharks in front of the cage! It isn’t often that multiple sharks will hang out together, however these 2 hung around for almost an hour, swimming around the boat and constantly coming back to see what our divers were doing. A minute later a large short-tailed stingray appeared and it made continuous appearances every half hour. The largest shark of the trip was a 2.9 meter female that had numerous scars on her snout, side, and near her tail. She was very graceful and precise in her moves. A much smaller shark that was 1.8 meters also graced us with its presence and put on quite a show. It went after the bait, then after the decoy and continued back and forth between the two for quite some time. It was an amazing sight for some very lucky divers! The trip ended with a quick cruise through Shark Alley, with a group of penguins swimming along side the boat as we approached. The seals were out in high numbers, swimming through the alley, playing and enjoying the water. On our way back to the harbor, we spotted a Southern Right Whale about 100 meters away. It was a very amazing trip for some very lucky clients! The second trip of the day was an exclusive trip. A couple from America, Ivan and Megan, rented out the boat, and had an absolutely amazing trip as well. Within the hour that we were anchored, they saw 9 different sharks! Three of these sharks we know well. One we call “Emma” and she has noticable scarring on her dorsal fin. Another we call “Caroline” and she is covered in parasites and large, dark scars. Lastly was “Claudia” with noticable notches missing from her doral fin. Our final trip of the day was just as awesome as the first 2 trips. Before we had even anchored there was a shark approaching the boat. It was a large female that was 3.8 meters and had very noticable scarring above her snout and near her tail. She spent most of the trip with us but would dissapear into the depths and then return 20 minutes or so later. “Caroline” also came by to visit us again and as always, she did not dissapoint. She began by approaching quite cautiously but after a couple of attempts at the decoy, she began to play with our decoy handler. She would nudge the decoy, then slip into the depths, leading us to believe that she had taken off to go explore elsewhere. A few minutes later, she would come full speed from below, launching herself and the decoy into the air. It was an amazing site to see. All in all, it was an outstanding day that no one will forget!
