Enter the natural world of one of South Africa’s most charismatic marine mammals. Your Swimming with Seals experience is guided by the Marine Dynamics team, whose knowledge of the Dyer Island ecosystem and its wildlife has been built through years spent working on these waters.
Unlike encounters designed to attract wildlife to people, this experience takes place on the seals’ terms. There is no feeding, touching or chumming. You enter their environment and observe their natural behaviour as they swim, dive and interact around you.
From Gansbaai to Geyser Rock
Your experience begins at the Great White House, Marine Dynamics’ headquarters in Kleinbaai, Gansbaai. After check-in and a safety briefing, board the dive vessel for an approximately 20-minute journey towards Dyer Island and Geyser Rock.
The greater Dyer Island ecosystem is one of South Africa’s best-known marine wildlife areas and is home to the Marine Big 5 – whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and the endangered African penguin.
Your guides select the swimming site according to the day’s sea conditions and animal behaviour, with Hospital and Batchelor Rock among the sites used near the Geyser Rock Cape fur seal colony.
Once in the water, spend approximately 20 minutes observing Cape fur seals underwater. Watch as they move effortlessly through the kelp and open water, often twisting, diving and approaching swimmers with their characteristic curiosity.
After the swim, return by boat to Kleinbaai. Back at the Great White House, changing facilities are available, with optional paid hot showers and the opportunity to enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant.

Swimming with seals should never come at the expense of the animals you have travelled to see.
Marine Dynamics follows a non-invasive approach: seals are not fed, touched or encouraged towards swimmers. Our guides read the animals’ behaviour and the conditions on the day, allowing guests to observe Cape fur seals naturally in their own environment.
The experience is backed by the same Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Conservation Trust teams that have spent years working with wildlife in the Dyer Island ecosystem, including responding to injured and entangled seals.

What to expect on your seal diving adventure
Approximately 1.5 Hours
The adventure begins at our Great White House in Allow approximately 1.5 – 2 hours for the full experience, including the boat transfer to and from the swimming site, safety briefing and time in the water.
Maximum 10 Guests
Our vessel can accommodate 10 passengers per trip, creating a more personal experience and allowing our guides to manage the wildlife interaction responsibly. This tour can also be booked exclusively.

Your Swimming with Seals Experience
Geared for Gansbaai Waters
Participants are equipped with full 7mm wetsuits, gloves and booties to help keep you warm and protected in the cool Atlantic waters. You are also provided with a diving mask, snorkel and fins. Flotation devices are available for rest breaks, while your guides remain nearby throughout the in-water experience.

Marine Dynamics has operated in the Dyer Island ecosystem for decades. Your crew understands the local sea conditions and is experienced in observing Cape fur seal behaviour. This team has also been directly involved in seal research, rescue and disentanglement efforts around Geyser Rock.

Swimming sites are selected according to sea conditions and seal behaviour, and Marine Dynamics follows strict wildlife-interaction and safety protocols. If conditions are unsuitable, the experience may be postponed, rescheduled or cancelled.

The experience includes your boat trip to and from the swimming area, safety briefing, guidance from the Marine Dynamics crew and the required swimming equipment, including a wetsuit, gloves and booties. Flotation devices are also available during the swim.
No. This is a surface swimming and snorkelling experience rather than a scuba dive, so no diving certification is required. You must, however, be a competent swimmer and comfortable in open water.
The minimum age is 12 years. All participants must be competent swimmers.
Swimming with Seals trips accommodate a maximum of 10 participants. Keeping groups small allows for closer supervision and a more controlled, responsible wildlife encounter.
The experience takes place in the greater Dyer Island ecosystem near Gansbaai, home to the Cape fur seal colony at Geyser Rock. Hospital and Batchelor Rock are among the swimming sites used, with the final location selected according to sea conditions and seal behaviour on the day.
Cape fur seals are fast, agile and naturally curious, and they may choose to swim close to participants. Every encounter is different because these are wild animals. We do not feed, touch or lure seals towards swimmers.
No. Marine Dynamics follows a non-invasive wildlife interaction approach. Guests may observe the seals but may not touch, feed or deliberately interfere with them.
Yes. Changing facilities are available at the Great White House. Hot showers are available at an additional cost of R60.
Meals are not included in the Swimming with Seals rate. The Great White House Restaurant is located at the Marine Dynamics headquarters, where guests can order from the menu before or after their experience.
Swimming sites and departures depend on sea, weather and animal conditions. If Marine Dynamics determines that conditions are unsuitable for a safe and responsible experience, the trip may be postponed, rescheduled or cancelled. Trips cancelled by Marine Dynamics qualify for a full refund.
Yes. Guests are welcome to bring a waterproof action camera or GoPro. Make sure it is securely attached before entering the water.
Cape fur seals are the focus of the experience, but the Dyer Island ecosystem is home to an exceptional diversity of marine wildlife. Depending on the season and conditions, there may also be opportunities to see whales, dolphins, seabirds and African penguins during your time at sea. Wildlife sightings other than the seals cannot be guaranteed.
Yes, you can. You will launch with the shark cage diving vessel and be part of the initial groups to dive in the cage. The swimming with seals team will collect you and assist with the transfer from the shark cage diving vessel. From here you will travel to Geyser Rock for swimming with seals. You will be back on land in time to travel back with the transport, should you have booked it with the shark cage diving tour.
