Today we concentrated our efforts around Dyer Island. On our morning trip we encountered several rafts of African Penguins while travelling to our dive spot. It was great to see these guys up close at the surface, where they look far more at home as opposed to stumbling around awkwardly on land! With the Penguin houses that the Dyer Island Conservation Trust has provided to protect chicks from predators, we are hoping to see a rebound in their population over the coming years.
Interestingly we did have sharks today, although they were the wrong colour! We were briefly joined by two small Blue Sharks at the cage. Generally we observe the Blue Shark in open water but occasionally they do show up closer towards the coast, so that was a nice treat this morning.
Our cage dive quiz master tested our guests on their sharky knowledge today with some interesting results! After our divers hopped out of the cage we headed over to Geyser Rock to check out the Seals. In addition to the Seals we saw some great Cape Cormorant activity today as well as a lone Giant Petrel bobbing around Slashfin earlier in the trip. It is estimated that Dyer Island is home to approximately 12% of the species’ population, so it’s a great opportunity to see this endangered sea bird.
For the second trip of the day we were joined by a small group of girls visiting South Africa from America. We headed out to pick up where our first trip finished, but before that we made a pass-through Shark Alley to have a look at the inhabitants of the Islands with the Cape Fur seals enjoying the winter sun on Geyser rock and although we couldn’t see any African penguins on Dyer Island we did spot a few rafts of these animals in the water around the Islands.
Once on anchor we waited patiently and whilst all the group gave the cage a go we unfortunately did not encounter any White sharks this afternoon either.
All in all another fantastic day at sea, and hopefully our white sharks show up again soon.
