Wilfred’s rock

Water Temperature: 16.1C + 15.9C

Visibility: 3m + 4m
Number of Sharks: 16 + 17
Conditions:  A warm sunny day with a red tide in the shallows but great visibility at the Island

It has been a while since we launched from Gansbaai harbor as the tide was working with us for the past few weeks. Today the tide was too low for us to leave from Kleinbaai harbor so we left from Gansbaai harbor instead. We headed to Wilfred’s rock and as we got on anchor sharks started to approach the boat. The first shark we spotted was Fishing Line shark! A 3.1m female that we rescued from a fishing line that was entangled around her head back in 2013. Amongst the sharks that we spotted on our first trip was a 2.2m male but also a 4.5m male. We sure had all sizes today. The 4.5m male is named Tiger as he has lots of stripes on its head and just in front of his dorsal fin. We ended up seeing 16 different sharks on our first trip. As we headed out of Kleinbaai harbor for our second trip we noticed that there was a red tide in the shallows so visibility must have been limited to 1m. Fortunately the visibility around the island was great and increasing as the day proceeded. We ended up spotting 17 different sharks on our second trip. After we got the cage back on the boat we went into shark alley to have a look at the Cape Fur seals and amongst them was an African penguin, not scared of the seals surrounding him or her at all.
