This morning’s trip left the harbour and was greeted with plankton ridden, dark waters in the Shallows that proved that the underwater visibility was going to be a challenge. With the decreased visibility in mind we decided to try out near the Island however whilst the waters were clearer, there were no sharks to be seen so back into the Shallows we went. It was here that “Alvin” a large male Great White was sighted. This individual is a great shark to have around the boat, being a nice size whilst also active and easily distinguishable with an indent on the front of his dorsal fin. This trip also had a juvenile Great White show up not long after. We had our fingers crossed for the second trip of the day that the waters had cleared a little as the area experiences fast changes in conditions and on occasions the visibility varies throughout the day. Unfortunately the visibility had not cleared up however the sharks more than made up for this with some great activity seen around the boat. We had sharks from the beginning and they were more than happy to get up nice and close to the boat and cage as well surfacing to allow us a good view. “Alvin” was yet again amongst the shark to visit the boat as well as a 3.3m male satellite SPOT tagged shark we have been seeing on and off for the past few weeks and a smaller male individual we know as “Mini Nemo”. Our largest sharks of the day and trip were two males very similar in size, measuring approximately 4.2m in length, however varying in colour with one very dark with a scratch on its head and the other lighter and a with some distinctive notches in the dorsal fin. It just goes to show that even with challenging conditions we can still have a fin-tastic day out on the water…
