Marine Dynamics Announces their Ecosystem Evolution in Marine Ecotourism

Marine Dynamics Shark & Whale Tours announces a significant rebranding and merging of business entities marking a new chapter in their dedication to marine ecotourism and conservation.

On Tuesday, September 10th, Marine Dynamics hosted an inspiring event at the Great White House in Kleinbaai, unveiling a rebrand and celebrating two decades of award-winning eco-tourism and marine conservation. The evening brought together guest house owners, tourism businesses, and media to witness the brand’s refreshed look and renewed commitment to its mission.

As leaders in marine conservation, Marine Dynamics has been at the forefront of preserving the fragile balance of ocean life in South Africa’s Western Cape. The organization’s dedication to 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers has influenced South African conservation policies. Through innovative initiatives and collaborations with key Tourism and Conservation Partners, Marine Dynamics strives to ensure the long-term protection of the Greater Dyer Island Ecosystem.

The rebranding effort, initiated in 2022 by Marine Dynamics’ CEO and Founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, Wilfred Chivell, involved collaboration with the brand agency OnlyKind. Chivell emphasized the goal of infusing the Marine Dynamics brand with a deeper sense of purpose and connection to the marine ecosystem. “The Marine Dynamics brand is bigger than us. Today, we are not just rebranding; we are renewing our promise to the ocean. The ocean is many things to many people; to us, it is life itself,” said Chivell.

A new logo inspired by the Marine Big 5 symbolises the ocean as a sanctuary, reinforcing their commitment to marine conservation. “We offer a sea of experiences, with a place for all,” says Chivell, reaffirming the “Your Choice Makes a Difference” motto, which encourages support for marine conservation and research efforts.

The most notable change for travel partners and guests is the integration of Dyer Island Cruises Whale Watching (Marine Big 5 Tours), which will now operate under the Marine Dynamics name. The International Marine Volunteers will be rebranded as Marine Dynamics Academy. Meanwhile, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, founded by Wilfred Chivell in 2006, will continue as an independent non-profit, supported operationally by Marine Dynamics.

Cari Roets, Marketing Manager of the Overstrand, marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of the Marine Dynamics Ecosystem, proudly announcing the rebranding and merging of operations with sister companies. “At the heart of our mission is the understanding of the transformative power our experiences offer. Beyond the exhilaration of encountering the majestic Marine Big 5, our tours offer profound opportunities for personal growth and a deeper connection to nature,” Roets explained. She emphasised that Marine Dynamics is more than just a provider of boat-based activities, describing the organisation as “adventure incubators, wisdom accelerators, and catalysts for change”. Executive Marketing Manager, Zilé de Kock, shared insights into the various national and international tourism trade events attended this year via video call from India, where she was representing the Western Cape and Gansbaai at ITB India.

Public Relations Officer Christine Wessels announced an exciting upcoming documentary on the shark industry in Gansbaai, produced by internationally renowned filmmakers Jasmin and Anton of Rockpool Media, aimed at shedding new light on the shark diving industry and advancing Marine Dynamics’ marine conservation efforts. Marine biologists and guides also provided insightful updates on the current whale and shark season, while Senior Bird Rehabilitator Xolani Lawu captivated the audience with recent penguin releases and heartwarming stories of African Penguin couples at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary. Trust Educator, Pinkey Ngewu invited the audience to participate in International Coastal Day on September 21, 2024.  A Facebook Event will be published with more information.

Susan Visagie, owner of the Great White House Restaurant, Chef Chris Pead and the team proudly unveiled the restaurant’s rebrand and the eagerly awaited refreshed menu, showcasing a diverse range of dishes designed to cater to all tastes. From innovative options like seaweed salads and vegan chickpea omelettes to indulgent offerings such as abalone, freshly caught fish, and hearty free-range chicken and beef burgers, the menu reflects a commitment to fresh, local ingredients.

To sweeten the experience, the dessert selection promises to delight even the most discerning sweet tooth. Chef Chris added a special touch to the evening by demonstrating his weekly foraging process, highlighting the restaurant’s dedication to sourcing unique, sustainable ingredients.

Looking towards 2030, Marine Dynamics is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: #14 Life Below Water, #15 Life on Land, #8 Decent Work & Economic Growth, #12 Responsible Consumption & Production. Marine Dynamics has been Fair Trade certified since 2008 and all vessels are Blue Flag Certified.

“We are grateful to all our tourism and conservation partners that have been a part of our journey thus far. Together we hope to realise our greater vision which is to see the Greater Dyer Island ecosystem better protected in its entirety,” concludes Chivell.
