The morning alarms rang early today as we set off to launch at 7am. A launch from Gansbaai harbour greeted us this morning due to some tidal issues in Kleinbaai harbour. Once around Danger Point and into the Shallows it wasn’t long until our first shark of the day turned up and soon after we had many more fishy visitors around, this included “Flubs” and “ Francois” two sharks that were acoustically tagged back at the start of December and “Jacob” and “Mandy”, two of our favourites in the bay at the moment. The activity was fantastic this trip with more than one shark seen around the cage multiple times and also some stingray action here and there. It was just the fish that held our attention this trip, we also had some friendly marine mammals in the form of some Humpback dolphins spotted from the boat whilst on anchor! The second trip got of to good start with “Pieter” arriving only five minutes after the boat had. “Pieter” is a specialy shark to us, not only is he great to have around the boat he also is part of our tagging and tracking program and our biopsy program! The other shark to visit on this trip was a small White shark happy to investigate but not stick around too long. The third and final trip saw the conditions out on the water change with an increase in both the wind and swell making for an exciting ride! We had a bit of a wait, close to 30 minutes for our first shark, yet in that time we also saw the Short-tailed stingray again and a Bronze Whaler cruising through the schools of fish in the distance! Another 30 minutes past before “Jacob” showed up and proved to be the star of a slow afternoon, due to his size and slow approaches to the bait line with his snout sticking above the water! With two other sharks we concluded our trips for the day and headed back to Kleinbaai harbour.  A Merry Christmas from all of us at Marine Dynamics, may your festive season and New Year be FIN-tastic…
