Conditions: Slight swell dying down as the day passed with clearing skies however an increase in the wind seen throughout the afternoon.
Wildlife Wednesday anyone?! Today was Slashfin’s first day back on the water after four days off sea due to a cold front sweeping through the area, we all wondered what we would encounter and to have all three of our trips see Great White sharks left us ecstatic after the last week or so of slower activity.
The first trip of the day braved an early morning start allowing us to be the first boat on anchor in the Shallows. We filled the waiting time with shark filled chit chat and as we headed into our last hour on site our first shark appeared out of the blue. A juvenile male White shark we encountered on our last trip on the previous Friday, we were happy to see a shark let alone such a feisty little guy. He stuck with us for all three of our cages and even at one point cleared the surface of the water with a spectacular breach seemingly out of nowhere, much to everyones surprise. We also had a second smaller shark show up during this time, making a few approaches before disappearing. The trip ended with a cruise back to Gansbaai harbour instead of our usual Kleinbaai launch site due to tide constraints. Whilst this is a little longer than the normal trip back it is a chance to appreciate the beautiful coastline this area boasts but also there is always that chance of encountering other marine wildlife, say a pod of Bottlenose dolphins, as were lucky enough to this morning!
Hence the second trip of the day started in Gansbaai, steadily making it’s way back around the point with sights set on our morning anchor spot. This trip was an exclusive for a family visiting the area for the day and once the group and team were back in the Shallows they didn’t have long to wait for what they had come for. The smaller White shark from the earlier trip showed up again making for some nice views.
The third and final trip of they day had even less of a wait with the first shark appearing within minutes of re-anchoring. It was the male from the first trip back again to finish of the day. He stuck around for the start of the trip however he did disappear after this leaving the boat for the rest of the day.
