Today really felt like a winters day, with grey skies, mist and rain. As we approached Dyer Island the characteristic slow swell was running, therefore we anchored our vessel downwind of the Geyser rock seal colony, in the sheltered mouth of Shark Alley. After a mere wait of five minutes a very familiar dorsal fin popped up with a distinctive black mark on the right side. The tip of this sharks upper caudal fin (tail) was missing which just confirmed it for me… this shark was Zane! Zane was the very first male shark we acoustically tagged at Dyer Island in 2011. While tracking this sharks natural movements Zane earned himself the reputation of being a ‘cage diving boat snob’ and today after he made a few passes at the decoy his curiosity was satisfied and he moved off (probably back to the channel behind us to stalk seals!). Its so nice to see the return of this awesome predator, knowing that he has probably been on a long distance migration somewhere east and avoided numerous human threats to get back here. The rest of the trip was filled with amazing passes of more male sharks, one animal I estimated at >4.5m TL. Our divers had a blast and were even joined by three very nervous looking cape fur seals for a few minutes next to the cage! Winter shark season has now begun and we cannot wait to see the return of many more familiar fins to Dyer Island!
