Sightings:  Great White sharks, Bronze whaler and Short-tail stingrays

Location: Joubertsdam

Water Temperature: Moderate

Visibility: Low

The sharks are back in town! A stunning day out on the water with a big surprise in the shape of multiple White shark sightings. Our morning started out with a slow cruise to our anchor site as the sun rose with us. Once on anchor we had the Bronze whalers attention quite quickly as a number of adults and smaller individuals approached the boat, leaving our first cage of divers exclaiming excitedly as the sharks came right by the cage. During our second cage we heard news of a possible White shark sighting and moved closer to what was thought to be the area they were spotted. Within moments of re-anchoring we had our first Great White shark, a juvenile female, approximately 2.5m in length but for what she lacked in size she sure made up for in activity as she continually made approaches to the boat and on the bait line. This shark was last documented by the team in late March of this year. Not long after this shark appeared a larger, darker Great White, a male approximately 3.4m in length known to us as Shaun the shark, he has been seen on and off for the last month. Not to be left out, whilst the shark activity around the boat was kicking it up a notch, two Short-tail stingrays continued to glide up from the depths.

The second trip of the day launched and had hopes that they would be able to repeat the experience from earlier in the morning, and they did. Shaun the shark made his presence known quickly and continued to be seen throughout the trip, however, another White shark was documented soon after, a male a little larger and one our team know very well, this was Pieter. An iconic White shark for Marine Dynamics, he has been logged in our system since 2012 and in the years past has become one of Dyer Island Conservation Trust’s study animals with Pieter sporting an accoustic tag in 2015 and also biopsied in the same year. This shark was last seen back in March of this year – welcome back Pieter. The Bronze whalers, appeared to shy away from this trip with an odd few sightings seen here and there throughout the time spent on sea.

The third and final trip launched, could we make today a trifecta? An exclusive trip for a group of guests visiting from Russia, they too were lucky to encounter a Great White shark. Shaun the shark and the smaller female came back for the afternoon. These two White sharks had such a presence for this trip that the Bronze whalers were not seen.

A fantastic day out on the water for guests and crew alike of Marine Dynamics..
