What a fantastic way to start the week, with the day spent out on sea with great conditions and of course Great White sharks. The first trip for the day was on anchor quickly after settling in amongst the other boats and just as the last of the guests were wiggling into their wetsuits our first shark appeared, cruising before coming up to the surface to glide around the boat. This was one of the 3.0m male White sharks that we have been encountering quite frequently lately, unfortunately he did not stick around and as the first cage settled into the water he dove deep and disappeared. The waiting game began as those on board enjoyed the sunshine and those in the water braved it out in the hopes of another sighting, and it did as a new shark, a little juvenile, made a fast approach from deep towards the bait line at the surface, towards the cage, dove right by the divers and disappeared like our previous one. It was during the second cage that we decided on an anchor move with a changing wind direction. The new anchor spot proved a successful choice with a large female, Clampy joining our sightings for the day, whilst she seemed content on only a few passes we were excited to see such a large and calm individual around the boat. The trip finished with another of those 3.0m White sharks appearing, they seem to be the dominant ones in the bay currently with many of them making up most of the trips’ sharks. This shark slowly passed us by every now and again as we finished off our morning on the sea. Back out to sea for our second trip and it looked like the afternoon was making a turn for the quiet side however with some patience this group had their first White shark appear around an hour into anchor. Things started to get quiet again after this as the bay appeared still of shark activity. The sharks were not the only interesting wildlife encounter we had on the water today with a Short-tailed stingray appearing multiple times and a young African penguin spending much of its’ day with us, spotted propped on the surface before diving and making its’ way around the bay.
