Slashfin and her crew were eager to get back on sea after four days off due to a large cold front that came through the area. They were up bright and early as our guests started arriving to the Great White house at 5:30am and woke up with the help of some coffee, tea and breakfast. With briefing done it was time to launch as Slashfin exited the harbour and made its’ way into the Shallows. The anchor spot proved successful with a Short-tailed stingray gliding to the surface within moments of the boat settling on site followed quickly by our first shark sighting of the day, a Bronze Whaler or Copper shark appeared. The early morning passed with some enjoyable sightings from both the Copper sharks and stingrays and just before trips end the Great White shark appeared, and what a shark to encounter as Scarletjie, an estimated 4.0m female came by the boat. This female has been documented in the bay for approximately 4 weeks now and we are lucky enough to see her pass by our vessel every now and again.

The second trip of the day launched with another quick start to the wildlife sightings as the Copper sharks and Short-tailed stingray appeared just after the boat had re-anchored and a small Cape Fur seal decided to show off its’ hunting skills as it brought its’ catch to the surface to show all onboard, a breakfast of small shark for this seal today! This trip also lucked out with White shark sightings as two different individuals visiting the boat during their time out on sea, with an estimated 3.0m and 4.0m shark coming by, the first with a distinctive black spot on its’ fin, believed to be a new sighting for this month and the second a large female sporting a rosie, or white pigmentation on the left side of her dorsal fin. The journey back to the harbour produced more wildlife as a Southern Right whale was spotted.

To finish off the day Slashfin launched one more time to enjoy the afternoon out on the water. The Copper sharks were yet again seen from nearly the get go of the trip and as if not to be forgotten, soon after, the Short-tailed stingray came back to the surface. The afternoon progressed with much “bronzed” activity, with all onboard enjoying these fascinating and feisty fish. Approaching the two hour mark to which the group had been on sea was when things really became interesting as the Great White shark finally appeared, the 3.0m shark from the second trip had come back for a visit!
