It was another early start this morning with Slashfin launching from Kleinbaai just after 7! The conditions were fantastic earlier on today with clear, blue skies, little swell and a slight wind that kept things fresh and helped with our scent trail to attract the sharks! We had a small wait for the sharks to turn up but “Mandy” one of those White sharks we have been come very acquanted with over the last 5 weeks showed up as our first shark of the day. Not too long after the largest shark of the trip and ultimately the day came by, a 4.3m female with a fresh bite mark on the left side just under the dorsal fin. This female displayed some fantastic behaviour around the boat as she slowly glided in with her head just above the surface of the water! We had a number of juveniles visit during this trip including one of our acousticlally tagged White sharks, “Flubs O’Sullivan Grande”.The second trip of the day was an exclusive for a group of 11 divers. This trip started off well with a shark present on arrival back to the cage. The most active shark of the trip was “Pieter”, who took it upon him self to show off and leap out of the water! The third and final trip of the day launched with some increased winds around making the water a little choppy. This also appeared to make the visibility even more of a challenge as it became murkier and murkier! Luckily even though the conditions were not the best a shark as spotted only five minutes after we had re-anchored! We also had “Pieter” and “Flubs” around both part of our tagging and tracking project. It appeared that this afternoon was a time for the little guys to shine with juveniles dominating the waters. Whilst these may be lacking in size they make up for it with their behaviour which is much more “playful” with fast swimming and quick moves that they can easily wow those on board just as much as the larger ones! The Short-tailed stingrays were also around today, dancing out of the depths when they felt like investigating the happenings at the surface! A nice day out in the bay…
