Conditions: Another beautiful sunny day in Kleinbaai.
Due to the tides, we launched our first trip from Gansbaai harbor today. The sun was peaking out from behind the clouds and our divers were anxious to meet the white sharks. We started our first trip with just a 10 minute wait before “Karim” the 3.5 meter tagged male white shark appeared. He was quickly followed by a 3.6 meter long female, a 2.8 meter long male, a 3.1 meter long male named “Vuvuzela.” We also saw a 2.5 meter long white shark with the remnants of an acoustic tag hanging below the dorsal fin, and “Feisty” a 3 meter long male white shark that was recently tagged by the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. Our second trip was dominated by the sub-adults. We had “Nala,” a 3.4 meter long female with a white scar on her head, the 3 meter tagged male from trip one, “Pieter” a 3 meter long male with black marks on his right side, a 2.2 meter long white shark with lots of scars on the top of its head, a 3.8 meter long female with a small fresh wound just before her dorsal fin, a 3.5 meter long male with freckles all over its dorsal fin and a scar above its gills on the right side, a 3.5 meter long male with a freckle on its snout, and a 3 meter long female with a bite scar on the front of her dorsal. Our last trip of the day was en exclusive trip with a lovely family from Russia. We saw 6 different sharks this trip. The first was 2.8 meters long and was quickly followed by “Chama Tica” and “Nala.” These 2 stole the show with “Nala” being the most active as she flew out the water for the seal decoy. We also had a 3.7 meter long female white shark with scratches down its side, a 2.6 meter long recently tagged male white shark, and a 3.3 meter long white shark with fresh wounds to its snout and leading edge of its caudal fin. All in all, it was a splendid day at sea with these magnificent creatures!
