What an exciting day out at sea! Fantastic conditions, incredible visibility, great people and above all, majestic sharks! On our first trip we saw a total of 11 Great White sharks, coming really close to check out the cage, keeping our bait and decoy handler quite busy. Ranging from 3m up to 4.8m, the sharks had an aim to impress everyone on the boat today, and what a show it was! From breaching out, grabbing the decoy, and chasing a live seal, they managed to keep us all in awe admiring their beauty.
Maureen, a large female great white shark of around 4.8m (yes, she is bigger then our cage), that is easily recognizable with her Ocresearch Tag on her dorsal fin, represented all Great White sharks with her elegance while swimming around the boat. On her upper body, a large group of parasites could be noticed, which indicates how far she travelled as these only get on sharks in warmer waters.
The second trip of the day started as great as the first one, as our todays marine biologist is studying whales, she has brought us her good luck charm and we saw a Bryde’s whale passing only a few meters afar to say hello. A new male shark has joined us today, showing off his Ocresearch Tag as he was teasing our decoy handler.
Though we had 6 sharks on that second trip, they surely challenged the divers with taking their breath underwater as they were around our cage three at a time!
Finally, as we made our way back to harbour, a quick pass through the world’s famous Shark Alley, to admire the seal colony, with a fantastic start of sunset that put a smile on everyone’s faces.
What a blessed day to be at the capital of Great White sharks!
