Due to strong weather coming in, we had one early trip today. It began earlier than we usually do, but it was worth it for the stunning sunrise we all got to see. The weather began perfectly, with a light breeze and small swell. We only waited 10 minutes before the first shark arrived! It was a 2.1 meter white shark with a light patch along its right side. Just a couple of minutes later another shark appeared. This was one of our recently tagged sharks measuring about 2.6 meters long with black scars around its caudal. Our third shark came quickly as well, a 2.5 meter white shark that was very curious and active. It continuously made circles in front of the cage, giving everyone a stunning view. After a little while of this shark playing around in front of our divers, it suddenly took off with great speed. Slowly a shadow emerged from the depths. It was a stunning 3.8 meter long white shark with very distinct scars down its left side of its body and bite marks around its caudal. This shark stayed around for a bit before venturing back into the depths. A huge flock of thousands of Cape Cormorants flew past the boat, perhaps hunting for some bait balls that frequent our coast. Our 5th shark came about 10 minutes later as the swell and wind began to pick up. It was a 3.3 meter white shark and was a bit shy, staying beneath the surface, giving our divers an amazing view. Activity began to slow down as the swell picked up, and our divers went for a bit of a free roller coaster ride in the cage. They were all laughing and loving the free ride, as the swells pushed the cage up and down in the water. We also had a few visits from a Short-Tailed Stingray. These are beautiful animals closely related to sharks, with the largest wingspan of all of the worlds stingrays. Our last shark was the exact same size as the first shark at 2.1 meters long, however this white shark had a much larger light patch along the left side of its body. This little shark was very active and gave our last cage a spectacular show, doing some breaches just a meter from their faces. Despite the strong winds and swells that our trip ended with, it was a great day at sea today and all of our divers were more than satisfied, with several telling me that this was much more than they expected and they had their expectations set high! The next couple of days will be no sea days due to a storm bringing in strong winds, rain, and large swells. I hope that when we return to sea later this week, that the sharks will be as curious and active as they were today!
