Trip 1
The first trip of the day launched bright and early and the sharks appeared about 30 minutes after we did. The first shark was large and pale but was not content on sticking around but luckily minutes later another female similar in colour and size showed up, one we know by name. “Nala” is a new female in the bay and is easily recognisable by the scars on her head on jaw and white pigmentation on her dorsal fin. She is one of the favourites at the moment and is always a great sight to see. We also saw one of our recently acoustically tagged animals.
Trip 2
The second trip started off well with a shark around only five minutes after we arrived back. Second later another moved into view, the acoustically tagged animal from the first trip back again! This trip saw some slow periods of time with the sharks coming and going however the activity was fantastic with some fantastic shark behaviour seen around the boat. The trip finished with “Vuvzela” one of the male White sharks currently in the bay visiting the boat as the group was heading back to land.
Trip 3
The third and final trip of the day launched and headed into the Shallows. On arrival we could see two different White sharks cruising in the distance just under water’s however as much as we would have liked them to come closer they had other plans in mind and did not approach. Once on anchor we could see a very small White shark curiously investigating a bunch of floating kelp about 50m away, this little shark did approach however it was very skittish and would not come close. We then decided to move anchor hoping for some better luck and after patiently waiting again we were all distracted by a Southern Right whale and it’s calf in the distance when we had a large female approximately 3.5m in length make some impressive attempts on the decoy and then the bait line. We also had one more small juvenile appear but not stick around either. A slow afternoon but thankfully we were able to see some of this bays elusive White sharks.
Thank you to all that joined us today on board Slashfin, we truly appreciate your patience and understanding when wildlife is concerned and we hope that you all enjoyed the sightings that we had.
