Trip Comments:

Today we launched from Kleinbaai harbor at 8am and we headed for Joubertsdam, also known as the shallows. It was a cold morning but because we launched early we were able to watch part of the sunrise. As the sun got higher it got warmer. Visibility was not bad for the shallows it was 2m on both trips. Also the water temperature was not bad at 15.6C. Shortly after getting on anchor we spotted our first shark, a 3m female that we know very well now as she has been around for quite some time. This female was unfortunate to get a hook in the left side of her mouth some time ago and we do not know where it comes from. One of the other sharks that was around for our first trip was the 3m female better known as the fishing line shark. On our second trip we had to wait a bit longer for sharks to show up but when they did we saw 3 sharks at the same time including the two females I mentioned above. Numbers kept on increasing and we ended up seeing 15 different sharks varying in length from 2m to 4.2m. Amongst these sharks was Ingrid, a 4.2m female that we hadn’t seen for some time now. We had heard from other boats that she had sustained quite some damage to her dorsal fin, most probably due to a boat propeller. Today was the first time we saw her with this wound and we got a bit upset when we saw it. Fortunately she was very active and didn’t seem to be affected too much. Hopefully she will show up the next few weeks so that we can monitor the healing of the wound.
