Trip 1
The first trip of the day launched bright and early this morning and headed straight into the Geldsteen. The conditions were nice, especially after days of stronger winds and larger swell, we were greeted by a decrease in both these factors making for a pleasant day out on the water. Whilst this trip was visited by a number of different White sharks the stand out was surely “Ingrid”, a large female we have gotten to know well since 2012 when we first documented her in the bay and in 2014 she was nicknamed as she had become a favourite. She is easily identifiable by the unfortunate damage done to her dorsal fin, most likely by a boats’ propeller, that has left her fin in three sections vertically. It is great to say she has healed well and her activity has not changed from before the injury and today was no different as she stuck around for the entire morning and made slow passes allowing everyone to truly appreciate the beauty of these creatures that are so often miss-understood and miss-labled!
Trip 2
The second trip of the day launched as the swells began to lessen a little. The conditons were fantastic out on the water and we had a shark almost instantly on arrival, what a way to start a trip This was a large male that cruised around for a little while before heading off elsewhere. We were also joined soon after by a smaller male named “Sellendilloh” by the Ocearch team that tagged him in 2012. His movements and more information on this shark can be found on this website here. The rest of the trip was dominated by the females with some truly impressive sharks turning up both large and sneaky and small and feisty.
Trip 3
The third trip and final trip of the day headed out this afternoon and we were graced with the presence of a White shark as the divers were getting into their wetsuits. The shark activity we had seen the previous trips was fantastic and we were lucky enough to have it continue well into the afternoon with this trip. We saw a nice mix of juveniles, sub-adults and even what could possibly be a matured adult with a female present for some of the trip measuring in at an estimated 4.0-4.5m in length, the largest shark of the day! The activity was constant and the great conditions underwater gave our divers the chance to see the sharks clearly.
