A stunning Spring Sunday out on sea for our three trips today, the first of which set off from Gansbaai harbour early in the morning. With sights set on the Shallows, Slashfin and her crew and passengers made their way around Danger Point and into the bay to settle onto anchor. Within minutes of arriving a Great White shark appeared, a large female, estimated by our team at approximately 4.0m in length, she has been a regular sighting over the last four weeks in which we have nicknamed her Scarletjie, as this sharks markings and scars are similar to one of our well known female White sharks, Scarlett! She didn’t stay long but soon after she left a Short-tailed stingray came gliding to the surface and the Copper sharks made an appearance.For the remainder of this trip we had some stunning interactions with the copper sharks, and even a Southern Right Whale mother-calf pair on the way back into the harbour to collect our second group of guests.
We cruised out to the Shallows again for our second trip, and the copper sharks were on us again within minutes. So we got our first group of divers into the water and face to face with these sharks. Activity was good for about 20 minutes, and then all of a sudden they were gone. And a 4m female great white might have been the reason! This is a new shark for us, with some horizontal scars on her left flank and a rosie on the left side of her dorsal fin. She gave 2 cages some fantastic out of the water activity and some very close passes by the cage. The copper sharks returned in dribs and drabs towards the end of the trip and then a couple of stingrays surfaced. On the way back into the harbour we encountered another mother-calf pair of southern right whales! An excellent trip all round!
The third and final trip of the day launched into some pleasant afternoon conditions as the swell weakened and the sun kept shining. We felt bronzed with all that sunshine around and it appears so did the sharks with nearly constant Copper shark or Bronze Whaler activity throughout this trip. The trip was made up of what appeared to be adult female sharks , a few individuals that appeared to be the feisty ones, made mulitple close passes showcasing their astonishing speed and agility. The Short-tailed stingray also made a visit to the boat this afternoon, gliding gracefully to the surface through the murky waters so we could have a good view of the largest marine based stingray in South Africa.
