It was a clear yet cold morning today for our divers as they made their way down to the harbour for launch. Once out on the water it was clear that the clarity of the water had improved since yesterday and we would have an easier task seeing the sharks today, both for the divers and observers. The first trip saw close to an hour wait till the first shark, an average sized male, showed up. This shark spent the next two hours coming by the boat every now and again. Whilst this was a quite time for the sharks there was something stirring under the water very close by, a Southern Right whale was crusiing by only 100m away from the boat. In the last hour was when things started to get exciting with the sharks as two new additions arrived, first was a juvenile female known as “Little Smithy” and not too far behind was a larger female “Scarlett”. A great end to the trip! The second trip of the day started off well with “Scarlett” showing herself within five minutes of the boat arriving back to the dive site. She stuck with us for nearly the entire trip until a larger female arrived, “Ingrid”, a shark with a habit of scaring off other sharks, made her entrance to oohs and aahs. Thankfully she is quite an active shark so even if she does chase off the other sharks she usually sticks around! This trip also saw the male shark from the first trip hanging around but yet again he did not stick around long each time he showed up but rather swam by quickly and retreated to the depths, possibly a bit shy around the larger females! A nice day in the shallows…
