A bright sun was in the sky as Slashfin headed out to sea on flat, flat waters. We arrived at our dive-site and quickly put the cage in the water. Our divers jumped into their wetsuits and soon the first Copper sharks arrived. Our divers climbed into the cage and were exhilarated as the sharks passed by the cage. We were visited by a Cape Fur Seal, who hung around the boat, basking in the sun. The Copper sharks were consistently active, entertaining our guests for the entire trip. Towards the end of the trip our guests saw a Southern Right Whale in the distance. Soon, however, we headed back to the harbour. Our guests left with an increased appreciation of the beautiful wildlife we have around Gansbaai.
What a perfect day to be out on the water! The second tour launched around brunch and we had a lovely ride out to our dive sight for the day. Once we’d anchored, we had our Copper Sharks came up pretty quickly and this was a great predictor of what was to come. We were lucky to have the sharks around the whole trip, with different animals moving in and out of the sighting. we had some sharks around with a lot of scarring, which could be caused by other sharks but also by altercations with man. Luckily for sharks, they heal up pretty fast, and these flesh wounds don’t seem to bother them too much. We also got to see 3 Cape Fur Seals milling around, paying no attention to the Copper Sharks around the boat. for the most part, these animals live in harmony. On the way back to the harbour we passed not one but two pairs of Southern Right Whales.
We started our 3rd tour off with a view of some whales too, with a mom and a baby moving towards Uilenkraalsmond. We passed them and then travelled to the shallows to find our cage once more. We had the same lucky as the second tour, spotting sharks almost immediately and then having an awesome dive with these beautiful apex predators. We were also very lucky to be approached by a curious Southern Right Whale and calf, who checked us out before mom took baby into deeper water.
