Sightings:  Great White Sharks and Bronze whalers

Location: Joubertsdam

Water Temperature: Moderate

Visibility: Poor

The bay looked a little dreary this mornng as we launched with overcast skies however the clouds soon cleared and the swell and wind stayed low for much of the morning before picking up towards the end of the day. The shark activity was anything but bleak with both Great White sharks and Bronze whalers seen continuously throughout the day. We started off the morning with two juvenile White sharks, feisty and fast-paced, they made quick moves around the boat before disappearing to make way for the bigger sharks. There were three of those for this trip with Shaun, the 3.3m male calming cruising in as he usually does with some seriously chilled behaviour, deep passes and sneak approaches from the 3.8m female and close and personal circling from the estimated 3.1m male that was first seen for the season recently. The Bronze whalers held their turf this time with multiple occassions when both species of shark could be seen, however like usual, the larger predatory shark that is the White shark seemed to continue to get the right of way. A fantastic start to the day, could it continue?

Back on sea as the day progressed, we encounter sharks as our guests were enjoying the dance that is donning a wetsuit! The Great White sharks and Bronze whalers turned up within moments of each other and we saw nearly continuous activity from either of the species for the entire afternoon. Three of the White sharks from earlier on in the day rejoined us for the afternoon, that was one of the juveniles, Shaun and the 3.8m female that proceeded to give us not one but two spectacular approaches on the decoy line, such a surprise that many of us didn’t even have time to lift our cameras and snap the moment but atleast it will stay in our memories. A new addition joined for the day on this second trip, a juvenile female with a bite scar on her head and distinctive notch on the dorsal fin, rounding our day off successfully.
