This time last year there were no sharks in the bay due to two male orcas hunting our white sharks. This year that is far from the case! We’ve been very fortunate to have sightings daily for about 8 weeks now and today was another great day at sea, not just for shark activity, but also the weather. It was the calm before the storm, with no swell and very little wind except towards the end of the trip. We had no wait time for our first shark, a beautiful 1.7 meter white shark with a bite mark on its left side of its face that we’ve seen around recently. It was quickly joined by a slightly larger shark at 2.3 meters long with a hook in its mouth. Both sharks seemed as if they wanted to show off for our divers, swimming closely in front of the cage and lunging out of the water, attempting to get the bait line. The first shark stuck with us for most of the trip, occasionally disappearing. Suddenly a large shark, approximately 3.6 meters long came flying out of the water a few meters from the cage. It didn’t stick around though, leaving an opportunity for more sharks to come through. We had 2 more, one about 2.4 meters long with 3 scratches on its right side that look a lot like the ADIDAS stripes, and our baby in the bay, the 1.3 meter male. Both were extremely inquisitive, making several passes and attempts at our seal decoy. These younger sharks don’t have the jaw power yet to hunt seals, however they are opportunistic hunters and if they see something that may resemble food, they tend to come investigate. Not to be out done by the white sharks, we had 2 beautiful bronze whalers and 2 short tailed stingrays come pay us a visit. It was a great day for elasmobranchs in the bay! We will not be going to sea tomorrow due to the weather, but we hope that the sharks wont venture far and that we can have another amazing day when we get back out there!
