The tides in Kleinbaai harbour gave our divers a little bit of a sleep in this morning with our first trip launching at 11am. The conditions had also calmed down over night with a small swell and slight wind found out on the water. We headed for the Geldsteen and once on anchor we had our first shark in only moments, one of the joys we experience more often in our peak shark season. The first two sharks were ones we have seen before, a small juvenile with its’ right pectoral fin bent up at a 90’C angle and a male approximately 3.2m in length called “Tum K”. Whilst the juvenile didn’t stick around, “Tum K” was with us for the entire trip and was one of the most active sharks. Along with this male there was another, known to us as “PJ” who stuck with us for the trip and every now and again provided some exciting movements of action. Our largest shark of the morning was a large female, one logged in our database since 2009, with very distinctive dorsal fin notch and some scaring, whilst she was an impressive size she did not stay with us for long. We had an exciting moment on board today with an attempt predation of a Cape Fur seal in the distance, this seal was lucky and from what we could see escaped the jaws of a hunting White shark. A quick look at the seals on Geyser Rock finished our successful trip before heading back to land!

Just arrived in the Geldsteen, not even dressed in the wetsuits and we already had some Great White sharks around. Within a few minutes we already had four different individuals around our vessel ‘Slashfin’. New sharks were arriving throughout the whole trip, at the end we encountered 10 different individuals. Shark activity was constantly great. Some sharks were investigating our seal decoy and a few others were trying to get hold of the bait without any luck. We also managed to to see a predation of the Great White shark on a Cape Fur seal a bit further of, which was great as we don’t get to see it every day. After having a fantastic time with these beautiful animals we were heading towards Geyser Rock, where our Cape Fur seals live.
