We had an elasmobranch overload this morning. With 8 white sharks, 2 copper sharks and 2 stingrays we were exposed to the true diversity of the family! Pretty much instantly we had a copper shark this morning, quickly followed by bitey, the 3.8m male who shot out of nowhere. After a few passes he disappeared into the depths. This was followed by a bit of a lull in white shark activity but the stingrays stuck around to keep us busy. We then had a quick turnover of some of the smaller white sharks in the area all passing Slashfin once or twice and cruising on with their morning! For our third cage of divers they got to witness a few more of the small white sharks, who seemed rather timid this morning, but they were then introduced to bitey once again who came super close to the cage with a sudden burst of energy, maybe the morning sun had gotten a bee in his bonnet. He seemed very enthused by the seal decoy this morning. To finish off this trip clampy cruised by our cage divers, and an uncharacteristic burst of speed towards the bait line, keeping Alfred on his toes!

Our second trip of the day had quite some luck with the elasmobranchs as well, with vists from 5 different white sharks and a short tailed stringray. Our first shark was a juvenile white shark we’ve seen around at about 1.7 meters long. It wasn’t the youngest shark though, with our 1.3 meter baby shark arriving to try to chew on Sally the seal decoy as always. We had 2 large white sharks, both at 3.8 meters long with one being female and the other being a male. They were both very interactive, however the female stole the show, lunging most of her body out of the water with incredible speed and power. Not to be outshined by the adults, a 3.4 meter sub-adult also came by for a visit, making several attempts at the seal decoy and bait line. While there were moments of slow shark activity, when they were around, we had some amazing sightings. What a way to spend the day!
