We had one morning trip today as some bad weather conditions were predicted to hit the area around midday, therefore our group headed out of the harbour nice and early. We arrived in the Shallows to find that the visibility had cleared up a little from the day before and the sharks were a lot easier to spot from above the water and see underneath. Immediately after anchoring, whilst our divers were getting into their wetsuits, those on the port side were treated to a shocking surprise as a juvenile Great White breached right next to the boat! With this fantastic start to the trip excitement was high however activity was a tad bit slow in the beginning until around 1 hour after anchoring when one of our familiar 4.2m males came cruising into sight and the day started to look better! This large individual was just the start of some great activity to come, as numerous individuals, all male, started to make themselves seen. All the sharks that we saw on this trip are ones that we are familiar with from previous trips in the last few weeks. The interesting pattern we have been seeing for these last few weeks is that the majority of our sharky visitors to the boat are male. During our Christmas and New Year period we had a somewhat even gender ratio with the sharks seen from the boat on average 50% female 50% male however in mid to late January we have seen an increase to an almost completely male shark presence seen on our trips. There are many variables that could be influencing the gender composition of the Great White population in this bay, such as temperature and currents or it could be as simple as the females are not coming to our boat! There’s always something interesting happening in the bay…
