Marine Dynamics Wins Sustainability Award at Hermanus Business Chamber Event

Marine Dynamics Shark & Whale Tours, a trailblazer in eco-tourism and marine conservation, has proudly won the Sustainability Award at the Hermanus Business Chamber Year-End Event held on Friday, November 22, 2024, at the Hermanus Golf Club.

This prestigious accolade highlights Marine Dynamics’ nearly 25-year commitment to responsible tourism, environmental stewardship, and community upliftment. Competing against esteemed finalists such as Creation Wines, recognized as one of the World’s Best Vineyards for its unforgettable wine experiences, and the Hermanus Country Market, a hub for over 60 local traders and a beacon of female entrepreneurship, Marine Dynamics emerged victorious.

Founded in 2000 by Wilfred Chivell, Marine Dynamics has consistently set the standard for sustainable practices. It is distinguished by certifications such as Fair Trade Tourism and WESSA’s Blue Flag status and numerous national and international Responsible Tourism Awards. Through its conservation arm, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, the company funds critical initiatives like the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS), Project Storm, and the Fishing Line Project.

Marine Dynamics’ eco-tours not only provide world-class marine experiences but also directly fund conservation research, resulting in over 40 peer-reviewed studies. Their DEEP Ambassadors Programme has empowered more than 100 learners from historically disadvantaged communities, while monthly Marine Evenings foster public engagement in conservation efforts.

“This award is a testament to our team’s dedication to creating a sustainable future,” said Wilfred Chivell, CEO of Marine Dynamics and founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. “Sustainable conservation/living is not a one-day effort—it’s a lifetime commitment.”

In addition to its conservation efforts, Marine Dynamics invests in promoting the Overstrand, the Western Cape, and South Africa as premier tourist destinations, allocating R5 million annually to marketing. Community initiatives such as monthly beach clean-ups, support for the Marine Dynamics Gansbaai Soccer Team, and employee financial support, including housing loans further underscore the company’s leadership in sustainability.

Marine Dynamics’ win is not just a company achievement but a triumph for environmental and community-focused initiatives in the region.
