Someone onboard with us today must have been a lucky charm as we had perfect shark cage diving conditions and extraordinary shark action… not to mention sightings of other marine animals! Due to the good weather and sea conditions we were able to anchor at Geldsteen, which we have found in previous dives here to be fantastic and today did not disappoint. We had our first shark within minutes of arriving and more continued to arrive throughout the first trip. A number of sharks visiting the boat today were over 4m in length, with our largest being an individual that matched the cage in size (4.5m)! We were also graced with a visit from an acoustically tagged shark, who stuck around long enough for our divers to have a look at the sort of tracking tags we deploy. Our most engaging shark of the day goes to a large female, on both the morning and afternoon trips, with two large patches of parasites on her head and scars near her caudal fin from previous parasite attachment. Not long into the morning trip we had a Short-Tailed Stingray glide up in front of the cage to investigate what all the fuss was about, this is the first time I have seen these stingrays in any of our dives sites other than the Joubertsdam. We also had our attention diverted from the sharks when a Humpback Whale was spotted cruising off the front of the boat! To top of the first trip we had a lengthy attempted predation take place not too far from the boat, after a lot of splashing we witnessed the lucky seal swimming off. We were also lucky enough to spot an African Penguin hanging out on Geyser Rock with some Cape Fur Seals. Four out of the “Marine Big Five” all before midday! This marvellous day continued into the afternoon for our second trip, with a special addition of a small individual with a satellite tag attached to its dorsal fin. These satellite tags were deployed by research group, Ocearch, who visited and tagged a number of individuals in Gansbaai in 2012. Information on tagged sharks including their names, gender and size along with tagging and tracking data can be found on their website http://www.ocearch.org/. I don’t think we could have wished for a better day…
