Chilly winds but sunny skies greeted us this morning. Our first trip was for a group of New Zealanders, who had brought along two small mascots in the form of an All Blacks and a Crusaders bear! Today marked the return of “Ninja”, a fin-tastically feisty female that we love to see around Slashfin! She has an amazingly active personality, and as her nickname suggests, she is a master of avoiding detection till the last moment when she comes torpedoing out of the water! We also had the pleasure of a trip spent with “Flappy”, a large female, about 3.8m in length, who has a distinctive curve to the top of her snout from an injury which caused a flap of skin to become loose and has healed with a dent like appearance. She stuck around us for the majority of our trip and showed quite an interest in our seal decoy! The sharks weren’t the only ones to show up, we also had two Southern Right Whales go right by us and an albatross taking advantage of the stronger winds to soar around the boat! Our second trip continued with as much gusto as the first with our little star, “Ninja” showing her stealthy skills once again. There are two sharks known to those at Marine Dynamics as big and little “Lumpy”. They are named so due to injuries on their trunks from previous bites from other sharks that have formed lumps, “Little Lumpy” has the lump on its left side where as “Big Lumpy” has one on his right side. This trip saw the appearance of “Big Lumpy”, a 3.9m male shark. We also had a quick visit from our large, easily recognisable “Malcolm X”. An eventful day around the island…
