The day stared with a pleasant sunrise drive out to Dyer island. On approaching our anchor site behind the seal colony, the conditions were perfect with clear blue water and a nice settled wind and current. The sharks arrived after a ten minute wait, and at first we saw mostly 3-3.5m male sharks. Midway through the first trip a very large >4.3m male arrived with distinctive scars on his dorsal and left flank. His girth was almost out of proportion to his length! He resembled a very well fed white shark and no doubt had a couple of seals in his stomach! Well done to Ashley and family from the Sunflower Stop Backpackers in Seapoint, Cape Town. Ashley’s son dived with his elder brother and parents for his 11th birhday, they got some awesome close passes of the larger shark! After a drive back to Gansbaai harbour to fetch group 2, we arrived back at our anchor site and decided to move to the mouh of Shark Alley where conditions were calmer. This visibiliy underwater was equally as beautiful, we could see straight down 11 m deep below the boat to the seabed. On this trip, our guests dived their hearts out and watched white sharks cruising along the bottom in numbers. Interestingly, we sighted a 3.5m shark with three of what looked like a species of pilot fish. These guys are usually more associated with tropical waters and it’s the first time I have witnessed them on Gansbaai white sharks. The mutual relationship between the sharks and pilot fish was amazing to watch, the fish aggregated closely around the sharks dorsal fin, seeking refuge together. The shark stayed deep therefore we were unable to get footage… however hopefully we will do soon!
