Today saw a very slow start. The arrival of a 3.8m female only 20 minutes after anchoring sent excitement through those onboard, unfortunately she did not stick around for long. “Big Momma” then graced us with her large presence before returning to the deep. We continuously spotted sharks in the distance but no amount of chumming, vibrations in the water or positive thoughts seemed to be working. It was at this point that our Skipper, Hennie, made the choice to move anchor to a new site. A great decision, with a surprise attack made on the decoy from a 3.4m male only minutes after we arrived! This male and also a 4m female allowed the divers onboard to all grab a glimpse of the Great White underneath the water! Trip 2 also saw us back at our new site with a continuation of shark activity. We were happy to see “Malcolm X” today, with her usual feisty personality and dominating ways leaving guests onboard ooohing and aaahing! The third trip of the day was an exclusive with a UK camera crew looking to capture some footage and sounds to provide an experience in which you can gain a sense of how it looks and sounds to go shark cage diving. The sharks must have known there was a camera crew onboard as the action was non-stop, with an “enormous” mention to the awe inspiring visit from a 5.5m female during the trip which saw even the crew excited! We visited Geyser Rock to check out the Cape Fur Seals at the end of this trip. There was a lack of seals in the water and an ominous feeling with the darkening sky that something maybe lurking underneath the waters of Shark Alley and it wasn’t long before a predation occurred close to the mouth of the Alley! There are some tell-tale signs that a predation is or has occurred, these include the change in a seals normal movement to erratic zigzagging leaps, a shark breaching, large splashes and possibly blood on the surface and the attraction of gulls or other seabirds to a specific area of sea surface.
