Due to low tides we launched from Gansbaai Harbour again this morning, while it does take a tad bit longer to reach our dive site it was a lovely trip around Danger Point with the sun shining down on Slashfin. The conditions this morning were perfect, we had clear skies and flat warm seas and after days of slow shark action we were relieved to have a large shark arrive very soon after anchoring with more to follow! Our first shark was a large female, named “Lori”, with a slight mark on the right side of her trunk under the dorsal. This mark was the remnants of an acoustic tag deployed by the research team at Marine Dynamics late 2010. It is always great to see these sharks return, looking healthy and active, welcome back Lori! She was not the only large individual at the boat this morning with two sharks 4.0m and above also present throughout the trip. We also sighted two juveniles who only stuck around for a short period of time possibly due to the presence of larger sharks in the surrounding waters. The second trip of the day saw beautifully calm and clear conditions and we hardly had time to anchor down and pull the cage alongside the boat before we were visited by a large, 4.3 meter female white shark who stayed with us for most of the trip, giving some fantastic view to our divers in the cage and guests on the boat! Once she moved on we were joined by a smaller white shark who made afew passing attempts at the bait line, as well as a quick visit by Lori! All round a fantastic trip for our clients, crew and our volunteers! Seeing sharks we know coming back to the boat after an absence is always a fantastic reminder of how we just cannot tame these majestic creatures…
