We launched from Gansbaai Harbour this morning due to low tides and made our way around Danger Point and into the Shallows. Once at our dive site we only had moments to wait till our first shark showed up. Within an hour we had our largest shark of the trip and of the day, a large female with an acoustic tag attached, this shark is one of our Named and Famed sharks, “Rosie” who was acoustically tagged on the 12th of March 2014 from our research vessel Lwazi by Alison Towner and Pieter Du Toit. A big Welcome back to ”Rosie”! While the winds were quite strong this morning this did not deter the sharks and we had some great activity and as the trip went on the wind decreased. Not only did we have an abundance of sharks on this trip we also witnessed large flocks of birds including Cape Cormorants and Cape Gannets feeding on large schools of fish right next to the boat! The second trip didn’t have long to wait with the sharks arriving just after anchoring. This group also had the luck of seeing the beautiful 4.0m female “Rosie” and had sharks continuously around the boat throughout the trip. The third and final trip of the day launched into some strong winds however within an hour of anchoring this wind had calmed down for a lovely afternoon. The trip got off to a cracking start with the well known satellite tagged “Sellendilloh” turning up for a visit and a 4.0m male we have not seen for a few days coming in to show off! The activity quietened down at the end of this trip and no matter how hard we tried to attract some sharks up to boat we had no luck in the last hour and a half of the trip. Unfortunately with wildlife there is always the chance that we may not see something or it can be a slow day, luckily we did see several individuals before the sharks seemed to disappear! A FINCREDIBLE day out in the bay…
