10/04/13 Trip 1
Location: Joubertsdam
Visibility: 3m
Water Temp: 16.3’C
Sharks Sighted: 7
Conditions: Slight swell, slight chop

Some days it’s just a pleasure to be on the ocean and this was most definitely one of them. We started early to beat the tide and were already on anchor by 7.15, the only boat on the water. We sighted two sharks, one smaller (~2.8m) and one larger (~4m) took it in turns to work close to the bait and cage. Then the wind changed and after clearing the anchor lines and kelp from our cage we worked on a settled Southeaster. Next the trip exploded to life; first a ±5m shark took a look at us before deciding it wasn’t interested and moving on, and then next, to my amazement, Nemo showed up! I’ve known this shark since I was a volunteer in 2007, she showed up on my second day looking very small, deformed and unhealthy. I’ve seen this shark grow as my careers developed and was privileged enough to place a PAT tag on her at the end of last year. This tag popped off to the south of Madagascar in February and here she was back in Gansbaai about 2 months later. We had caught her in just the right mood too, she was on top form and everyone got to see her up close and personal as she came by again and again. This trip had it ALL!
