Today felt like a real winters trip in summer. We had grey skies, wet weather , yet wonderful large active sharks! On the first trip, we counted 7 sharks in total, the smallest being 3.5m with both females and males around. ‘Rosie’ a super relaxed female with a distinctive patch on her dorsal fin gave our guests some excellent diving. Despite the rain, everyone was more than happy with the trip. In the afternoon we returned to the same location and even though the wind had swung South West, re directing our chumline, we picked up some extremely large sharks. A large pale coloured 4.5m female glided gracefully by the cage, literally dwarfing it as she did so! The angry sky and diving gannets made for some dramatic photography and  to my surprise a short tailed stingray showed up briefly (the water was almost 17 degrees by the afternoon, and the crew think this stingray only shows when its warm and i’m on trips as they haven’t seen it since!). One highlight of today, was chatting to a gentlemen from the Netherlands called Heiss, one never knows the type of person you will meet shark cage diving! He had sailed here all on his own from Holland, down the Atlantic and through the roaring 40’s! His yacht is currently docked in Hout bay, and in two weeks he sets sail to Australia, solo! I find it remarkable that a person can venture into the open ocean and navigate around the world like that (he has sailed solo to Alaska and intends to continue all around the Pacific on this leg!). Heiss told me he has 2 hour sleep shifts and total confidence in his equipment! I asked him if he is sponsored by an organisation, if it is for charity or if he is writing a book and his reply was simply “Nope its just for me!” see photos below for Heiss the hero!
