Sharks Sighted: Trip1 7, Trip 2 4 + bottlenose dolphins
Conditions: Flat calm
Another day of big sharks in Joubertsdam and a sign that things could be starting to change; several large males were sighted today – 3 of them over 4 meters in length. The highlight of trip 1 was when two of these worked together in tandem; the first a very chilled out 4.5m male cruising past the bait and decoy and the second a feisty shark breaching from the water and rushing the bait and decoy over and over. Finally another giant – this time a female came cruising past Slashfin. I’d put this shark a little over 4 and a half so maybe 4.7m – definitely big!! She made several passes and has a very distinctive fin. It’s now time to check our archives but I’m pretty sure we’ve seen this one somewhere before….
The highlight of trip 2 was when the pod of bottlenose dolphin we’d been hearing reports of suddenly came cruising through our chumline! Dolphin sometimes fall prey to white sharks; however this is mmore common is weak, injured or solitary individuals and with this pod at least a hundred strong they cruised past un-harassed by the sharks (this time!).
