This morning while we were launching from the Kleinbaai harbour we were lucky to see the sunrise, how beautiful. Arrived at the dive site we had some sharks around after a few minutes waiting. The shark activity was good during the whole trip. We encountered ‘Rosie’ again, probably the most famous female in the bay at the moment. In total we saw twelve different white sharks entertaining us for a few ours. After an amazing trip we were heading back to the Gansbaai harbour due to low tide. On our way we spotted some African penguins.
Trip two and the best trip I have guided so far this year!! On arrival we could see the visibility was stunning, with crystal clear blue water-a rarity inshore. ‘Rosie’ a 4.2m female empress of a white shark casually appeared and decided to circle us slowly… for pretty much the entire trip! The divers were well and truly spoiled as she was one of 14 sharks we identified in a few hours. On rounding Danger point before the trip, the crew and I had joked that I was wearing my lucky Santa socks and therefore we would get good sharks- low and behold… they worked! Spectacular and extremely lucky indeed. However yesterday a white shark stomach was found washed up in Cape Town on a Muizenberg beach, clearly cut out of the animal… inferring that poaching of this species is likely happening right on our doorstep. This news further highlights our luck today in seeing the number of sharks we did- but also how mindful we must be of the threats this vulnerable predator faces-even along coastlines where it is supposed to be protected.
The third and last trip for the day was just as amazing as the previous ones. The visibility got better and the water also warmed up a bit. We had sharks straight away. Rosie was slowly passing the cage so the divers could take some nice photos with their underwater cameras. But also from the boat we had a fantastic few. On this trip Rosie was also the biggest white shark we had with 4.2m in length.
