What a beautiful day to spend out on the ocean and looking at a Great White shark. We launched our vessel ‘Slashfin’ just after sunrise and were heading straight to our summer dive site in the Jubertsdam. The trip started off with two stingrays trying to get hold of the bait and decoy. After about an hour we spotted a Great White shark approaching our boat from the anchor line, but shortly she came around and was passing the cage. It was the same female shark we spotted the day before. She did hang around the boat for a while before she disappeared. Later on towards the end of the trip she passed us once again. During the trip we also got to see some seabirds, a Sub Antarctic skua on theway out, kelp gulls, and a juvenile gannet. All-over it was a great day and we have been lucky to see a Great White shark.
The second trip of the day was off to a great start with the same female White shark from the first trip and yesterday’s trips showing up again. Whilst the activity was great when she was around she unfortunately did stick around for long and disappeared soon after the 2nd cage of divers entered the water. We then had a very long waiting game with sightings very slow as a second shark arrived, a small male approximately 2.5m in length and sporting an acoustic tag that research team deployed in 2016. Whilst he was a little on the shy side it is always fantastic to see these animals back in the bay. A slow finish to the day but we are very pleased to have yet again experienced some White shark sightings after the 23 day period of no sightings in February, we hope to continue to see these beautiful creatures.
