We were the first boat out on the water this morning and apparently the early diver gets the shark with an astounding amount of sharks seen around our boat this morning. Things started quickly with the small, juvenile White shark with a torn but healed dorsal fin appearing from here sharks kept appearing with a few feisty juveniles around but also some larger animals including our largest shark of the trip an estimated 4.3m female! We were pleased to see some of our current known and favourite sharks around including “Mini Nemo” and “Gray”.
Our second trip for the day launched at 10:30 from the Kleinbaai harbour. We were heading straight to the anchor spot in the Jubertsdam. Just a few minutes after we picked up the cage our first shark for the trip arrived. It was a come and go of the sharks at the trip, we had in total 10 different ones, but none of them was around for too long. However we had good activity throughout the whole trip. We encountered also a few known sharks, ‘Mini Nemo’, ‘Gray’ and a recent tagged shark named ‘Brian’. Our biggest shark was estimated to be 4.4 meter and the smallest was just less than three meter. We definitely had a good trip out at sea.
The third and final trip was an exclusive for a family joining us from the United Kingdom. The trip was off to a great start with a small shark seen near our cage as we approached and a larger shark seen behind the boat as we re-anchored. This trip saw consistant shark activity with “Mini Nemo” joining us one last time for the day, but it was some newer individuals that really made an impact including a large male with parasite attachments seen on his head and front of snout and a estimated 3.5m female that was with us for most of the afternoon. We passed through Shark Alley at the end of the trip to show the family the colony of Cape Fur seals on Geyser Rock with the boat being escourted back to the harbour by a Sub-Antartic Skua.
A truly fantastic day out at sea!
