After four days on land due to a storm and big swells running in, it was great to be back on the water. Just after dropping the anchor at Joubertsdam, our dive site for today, we spotted a beautiful rainbow over Kleinbaai. Today we have been waiting not to long for the first great white shark. But before we got to see a shark a short tailed sting ray came to the surface to have look what’s going on. We were lucky to have eight different individuals around our vessel. The biggest shark was 4.5m and the smallest one just around 3m.
The second trip of the day launched with a decrease in the swell but thankfully not a decrease in the shark activity! We headed into the Shallows and within 5 minutes we had out first shark arrived followed closely by the second, a larger male that made an impressive attempt at the seal decoy. A new addition for the day and one that hasn’t been documented in the area resently was seen on this trip, with a sub adult White shark turning up with many patches of parasites on numerous parts of its body. Not to be out done by the bigger sharks, the last shark to arrive but also the most active was a small female under the 3.0m length that gave our last cage on this trip the viewing of a lifetime as she showed off right in front of them on the surface of the water.
The final trip of the day headed back out to see if we couldn’t make it three out of three successful trips! In little to no time we succeeded with the arrival of our first shark this afternoon not too long after we had re-anchored. This was a smaller individual that didn’t stick around but no worries not long after another individual zrrived, a large male approximately 3.4m in length with some scaring in front of its dorsal fin. The main shark of this trip also happened to be the fiesty little female from the days previous two trips, we will need to keep an eye on this one! Certainly a fin-tastic way to end the day.
