Conditions: Although a little chilly, a stunning day out on the deep blue.
We had two really spectacular trips out on Slashfin today in the shallows, sighting 4 sharks on both trips including a majestic 4m animal towards the end of the second trip!
The first trip started off really well with a beautiful 3.5m White Shark appearing in the first 15 minutes. This jet black animal is very distinct in that he is missing half of his right pectoral fin. His dorsal also flops slightly to the left which makes him awesome to photograph due to the way his fin catches the water. He stuck around for both trips and was pretty active throughout.
We also had our little 2.5m tagged shark show up at both trips, speeding around after the bait and the decoy, incredibly curious about both as they lay on top of the water. This shark also gave us an awesome spy hop on the second trip, simply sticking his head above the water to check us out, which is such as awesome sight! After speaking to some of the researchers in the bay, it sounds like this animal is quite a fan of checking up on things above the surface, having done the same at their vessel.
On the last trip, we had a stunning 4m Great White turn up! This animal was incredibly active and really epitomised the “apex predator” image, launching itself from the depths at the decoy, to the delight of all those on board. This legendry beauty stayed with us for quite some time, giving our divers an experience of a lifetime!
As for the other animals of the day, the first trip got to see some Cape Fur Seals, a few rafts of African Penguins and some diving Cape Gannets. The second were also able to see the Gannets dive as well as a Giant Petrel.
All in all, an epic day out on the water.
