Trip 1
The day was predicted to be a stunner and it truly was with little swell, a light, refreshing wind and clear skies however our sharks appeared to still be in the same mood as yesterday with many of the boats out on the bay struggling to get a sighting of this elusive animal. We patiently waited and hour for our first sighting which turned out to be a very shy female that came and went quickly only to be replaced with a larger male about 25 minutes later which also decided to come and go. An anchor change was decided on and once on the new anchor we had our first shark, the small female reappear and also another juvenile that also did not want to play. This trip also had a sighting of a Short-tailed stingray, as it glided up from the depths a few times.
Trip 2
The second trip of the day launched and we truly hoped that we would be able to find some White sharks after news in the harbour that some boats had yet to see any sharks for the day. On approach to our cage that was waiting in the Shallows we spotted a small White shark circling, our divers were changed quickly and our first cage got in only to have the shark disappear, however 20 minutes later a large male slowly approached made a few passes before moving on as did our next shark, a juvenile male known to us for the last two years after becoming part of our biopsy program. An hour into the trip and the decision was made to move which turned out to be a total game changer with three new sharks spotted on this second anchor and whilst this may not sound like a lot of sharks this activity was amazing and most of the time we were able to see a shark cruising close by or in the distance. These three sharks included one large male, a large female and a smaller female. The females were by far the most active and gave our divers an amazing view of what a graceful yet powerful creature the White shark is.
