Sightings: Great White shark and Bronze whalers

Location: Joubertsdam

Water Temperature: Cold

Visibility: Moderate

Would it be too much to hope that the thick white mist that blanketed the bay this morning was a sign that a White shark may be lurking? We launched onto a perfect bay – flat seas and no wind, but with that fog closing in, leaving us with what felt like our own little bubble of approximately a 50m radius clear area, and a somewhat omnious, sharky feeling to the morning. The first shark sighting was that of a Bronze whaler, cruising in circles around the boat and somewhat shy, this behaviour continued for a while before one of the male Bronze whalers made an appearance and showed somewhat more active and feisty behaviour as he came closer to the cage than either of the other Bronze whalers did. Towards the end of the trip as the last of our divers were taking the plunge into the cold Atlantic waters the call we had all hoped for was heared….White shark! The most amazing way to end a trip, the arrival of a 2.7m male White shark, gracefully gliding around, curiously investigating us just as much as we wanted to him. He made a few pasees by the cage, circling in and out of sight before making a truly impressive attempt at our bait line giving those on board a great view and those divers left in the water a once in a lifetime experience! This male has not been logged by our team this year and we are very excited to see new animals coming into the bay, we hope to see this juvenile again soon.

A big thank you to all our guests this morning for their patience out on sea, in the end it payed off and they can say that they have met a Great White shark!
