Knock knock… Who’s there? … The sharks! With no wait time for our first shark to arrive we knew that today was going to be a great day. And to top it off, there were some dolphins swimming in the distance! Our first shark of the day was quite curious about our anchor line, circling it before circling the boat to come see what the ruckus was. As our crew secured the cage to the side of the boat, this 2.6 meter white shark cruised by then off into the depths. It didn’t take long for it to return, making some jaw dropping passes in front of the cage. It wasn’t long before our 1.3 meter baby shark had arrived, trying yet again to chew on our seal decoy. Silly baby shark is just like a baby human, always putting things in its mouth to chew on! We had 2 females and 2 males on this trip, with one female at approximately 3.8 meters long and a scar on her head and the other female was Clampy, a 3.8 meter female that we’ve seen frequently in the past few weeks. The males lived up to their reputation and were a bit smaller, with one being 3.3 meters long with a white mark on his snout and the other the 3.8 meter male we’ve seen frequently with the bite mark on his left gill slit. Our last 2 sharks of the day were not to be outshined by the sharks we can easily recognize, as we had a 1.4 meter juvenile white shark chasing the fish and seal decoy and a 3.4 meter white shark with a scar on the top of its head, lunging out of the water with the seal decoy firmly between its teeth. We had some more visits from our elasmobranch friends, a copper shark and 2 short tailed stingrays. Once everyone had finished diving we had some time to kill due to the tide, so we headed out to shark alley to sea the white sharks favorite prey, the cape fur seals. What a great way to start the day!
After a super sharky start to the day we headed out eager to view some more sharks for our second trip of the day. Although the number indicate we saw fewer sharks, we were still witness to some phenomenal action. We had 5 total great whites on this trip with a very curious bronzie towards the end, as well as a couple of stingrays as well. So we had a plethora of wildlife to watch on this trip, but to the stars of the show, We had a couple of very feisty small sharks on the trip ranging from the smallest around 1.5m to 2m. These little sharks are wonderous to watch, really fascinating to see these sharks begining to grow up, its a scary world out there for a shark, so witnessing these guys here at this time of their life is awesome. We had a couple of larger sharks around Slashfin on this trip too, mainly cruising around in the afternoon sunshine. All in all another great day at sea!
