Trip One:

We were back out in the bay today after a day off due to bad weather conditions and whilst the conditions had improved there was still a slight wind causing a little bit of chop out on the water however we were still able to anchor just infront of the Islands at the Geldsteen and had the whole area to ourselves! The sharks arrived quickly with a small but feisty juvenile the first to appear quickly followed by two other juveniles before a larger shark came into view. This was “Tum K”, a average sized male that has become a favourite around the boat over the last few weeks. We were also lucky enough to see a female similar in size to “Tum K”, however this shark has been a favourite of the teams’ for a few years after they helped to dis-entangle her from some fishing line that had completely wrapped around her trunk just infront of the dorsal fin. It is always fantastic for the Marine Dynamics group to see this shark as they played such a pivotal part in her survival and a great way to educate people on the dangers of discarded fishing gear etc.

Trip Two:

The second trip of the day started off well with a shark soon after arriving back in the Geldsteen. This was a male known as “Sellendilloh” that was tagged in 2012 by Ocearch and measured in at that time at 2.5m in length nd approximately 145kgs. These days this shark is easily over 3.0m in length and would be quite abit heavier as well, for more information on this animal and his movements see here. This was not the only tagged shark to visit the boat this afternoon as later on in the trip one of our own acoustically tagged White sharks came by a visit allowing us to show and explain the sort of research that the company conducts through our conservation trust, Dyer Island Conservation  Trust.

We visited Shark Alley at the end of both of our trips today to see the Cape Fur seals.
