A wonderful start to the day with sharks appearing around the boat quickly this morning and new individuals continuously turning up throughout the trip. The first to turn up was none other than an Ocearch satellite SPOT tagged shark by the name of “Helen”. She has been spotted numerous times around the boat and is quite an impressive size coming in at an approximate 3.8m in length and with some great behaviour to go with that great size! We also had “Poseidon” another of Ocearch’s tagged sharks turn up later in the trip as well as Onno’s favourite shark “Vanessa”. One of the unique views today was a large male just under the 4.0m length that was continuously approaching the boat with very slow passes and checking out the above water surroundings as it stuck its head out of the water multiple times (what we call spy hoping). The second trip of the day saw a decrease in shark numbers but the amazing activity was still present in the animals that we did see.We had some very active males around the boat at the beginning of this trip however they made way for the females as they came in towards the end with “Clampy” a 4.2m beauty making her presence known and also a female coming in right at the end of the trip with a freshly deployed acoustic tag displayed for those on board to have a look at, this animal had only just been tagged hours before from our research vessel “Lwazi”. Today was also the last trip for Onno, one of our guides for the past 5 months, who is heading back to the Netherlands to further his studies in Marine Science.
