Well this morning was not a morning for those who like to sleep in! We had a very early start in the hopes of clearing the harbour before the tide became too low and also finishing out trip before the winds became to high! We made it out of the harbour in time and headed into the shallows with the rising sun guiding us. Once anchored we had little of a wait till the first shark arrived a juvenile with a distinctive dark scar just infront of the dorsal fin on the right making it very easy to ID this shark even when deep or at a distance. During the next 40 minutes it was just this individual and another juvenile however after this we were visited by some very active sharks, a few of which very interested in the bait and decoy line and were making some very fast and impressive attempts around the boat! We also had a Short-tailed stingray glide up for a visit and a somewhat interesting find on the front of the boat…a Puffadder shyshark’s egg! Sharks as an animal have three different reproductive strategies, the White sharks will give birth to live young whereas some species, generally the smaller ones, will lay eggs just like the one we found today. It’s possible that one of the Kelp gulls that frequent the boats may have dropped it or our anchor line may have picked it up. All in all a fantastic morning out on the water…
