Today we launched our vessel Slashfin just after sunrise and were heading towards the ‘Shallows’ or Jubertsdam. Shortly after we arriced at the anchor spot we had our first shark around, but the activity did quiet down so we decided to move the anchor a bit. And it was the right decicion, the sharks were actively going for the bait and decoy and we had sharks around constantly. We also spotted one of our recent tagged sharks named ‘Brian’.
Our second trip was just as amazing as the previous one. We had in total eight different sharks during our tour. We spotted Brian, the tagged shark, again as well as ‘Mini Nemo’ a little male we know since a few years. We have been luck on this trip to see the sharks right away and also with the good activity of these beautiful animals.
There was a little bit of a wait for our third trip of the day but a perfect amount of time to get everyone into their wetsuits and settled with cameras waiting for the sharks to appear! The first to arrive was one of the juveniles quickly followed by an estimated 3.6m female that really did show some beautifully calm but persistant behaviour. The trip continued in this manor with the juveniles and larger female before “Mini Nemo” shook things up with his surprise approaches and then towards the end of the trip the BIG sharks came to play including “Gray” a 4.2m female with light scarring on the right side of her trunk, another female similar in size but with little markings and to our surprise a female easily the size of the cage. This is the largest shark we have seen this year around the boat, it is believed she was seen around yesterday’s afternoon trip but would not come to the surface and was just a large, shadow staying deep. Today however she spent quite some time circling within view giving us a good look, including views of very distinct fresh and healed bites on her left side towards her underbelly. She is not one that we recognise on sight but hopefully she returns and we can capture some fin identification photographs to allows us to see if she is one of the previous year’s visitors. A great way to finish off a great day.
