Well what can we say about today…there was excitement from beginning to end with some great activity and wild life out and around the bay. On our way to the shallows this morning we came across a large, active pod of Long-beaked Common Dolphin. These are one of the three species we generally find in the area on a regular basis and are some of the most entertaining as they ride the wake of the boat and porpoise around. Now onto the main event of the day…White Sharks! We were unsure how today’s trip was going to turn out as we had arrived to our dive area to find many of the other boats very close today, an indication that the sharks may be on the slow side, however no need to worry, within 25 minutes of anchoring a juvenile female we have seen the past few days came cruising in from the left, only minutes after followed by a juvenile male we know fondly as “Pieter”. This set the atmosphere for the trip, as “Pieter” is somewhat of a show off and continued to wow throughout the trip and not to be out done our first individual continued to circle around the boat. We were also graced with the presence of “Dolphin Fin” another juvenile male, “Spot” a larger male, “Maureen” an Ocearch SPOT tagged female and a number of other sharks. One of the highlights of the trip was a full breach about 10 metres in front of us, there was no predation involved but this behaviour may be due to the shark seeing something on the surface for example the shadow of a bird as it flew by or possible it was scared by something that was underneath it. Unfortunately for many on board, including myself, this was a BIG surprise and only a few were able to capture it alas we still have the memory. A “Great White” Happy Birthday to Maureen, who shared her special day with us and the sharks! Thank you to all that joined us today, it was a truly enjoyable morning out on the sea…
